Kiosk Manufacturer Association (aka KMA) leads the efforts to improve self-service engagement and engagement outcomes with customers via technology like kiosks, digital signage, lockers, digital menus, drive-thru technology such as outdoor line-busting tablets and outdoor menu boards, facial payment kiosks, POS, Antibacterial, AI engines, robotic restaurant, thin clients, software and service. We educate and inform on regulatory compliance with ADA, Section 508, WCAG, PCI DSS, HIPAA and UL (indoor and outdoor). KMA is a Participating Organization with the PCI SSC involved in Cardholder Activated Terminals or CATs.  In ADA, we meet with U.S. Access Board twice a year and have been featured presenters at U.S. Access Board public webinars.  We are proposing issues for the next rulemaking session which has begun late 2021.

    Excerpt

    U.S. federal investigators today raided the Florida offices of PAX Technology, a Chinese provider of point-of-sale devices used by millions of businesses and retailers globally. KrebsOnSecurity has learned the raid is tied to reports that PAX’s systems may have been involved in cyberattacks on U.S. and E.U. organizations.

    Headquartered in Shenzhen, China, PAX Technology Inc. has more than 60 million point-of-sale terminals in use throughout 120 countries. Earlier today, Jacksonville, Fla. based WOKV.com reported that agents with the FBI and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had raided a local PAX Technology warehouse.

    In an official statement, investigators told WOKV only that they were executing a court-authorized search at the warehouse as a part of a federal investigation, and that the inquiry included the Department of Customs and Border Protection and the Naval Criminal Investigative Services (NCIS). The FBI has not responded to requests for comment.

    Several days ago, KrebsOnSecurity heard from a trusted source that the FBI began investigating PAX after a major U.S. payment processor started asking questions about unusual network packets originating from the company’s payment terminals.

    Other Speculation

    • I believe we will find out that PAX was the victim of a cyber attack that leveraged vulnerabilities in the PAXSTORE to exploit the app marketplace and a subset of Android terminals. Vulnerabilities that PAX has at least made a concerted effort to patch long before the FBI ever started to investigate. Other than possible negligence, I believe PAX will be found to have not acted maliciously. Not only should PAX survive this ordeal, but it will cause them to strengthen the security of their Android platform and associated security protocols, and ultimately they and their partners and customers will be better off.
    • May have something to do with geo-location. Perhaps a cloud connection fetching/providing to a non-standard cloud connection.  With temperature detection devices using facial recog, it was documented that calls to Dahua server in China were in fact being performed.  That sort of thing typically becomes action trigger for people like FBI.

    What is PopID? Pay-by-Face with PopID

    PopID is a universal gateway for verifying an individual’s identity based on people’s faces for applications such as loyalty, payment and entry. PopID has various enter-by-face and pay-by-face solutions, PopPay. Ideal for retail and restaurants, PopPay can be used at drive-thrus, cashier/counter spaces, pay-at-table or via unattended kiosks.

    PopID’s kiosks use facial recognition to give customers the ability to update/redeem their loyalty/rewards and pay using their face (with or without a face mask) across multiple restaurant locations. Credit card information is tokenized using Datacap’s payment solutions such that PopID can initiate payments in-store or online without storing cardholder data in any capacity.

    In addition to data security, this omnichannel approach to payments fosters a universal experience across all channels, empowering PopID to create forward-thinking, friction-free payment solutions for its customers.

    Results

    An example of one of PopID’s many locations, Daddy’s Chicken Shack (located in Old Pasadena, California), implemented PopID’s kiosks early in the COVID-19 pandemic. Owner Chris Georgalas commented “We brought PopID’s kiosks in a few months into the pandemic, partly to act as a physical barrier between people and partly to help ease the ordering process… There’s no touching, there’s nothing whatsoever for [the customer] to do. I think it’s just amazing.”

    Future Outlook / Expanding Nationwide

    PopID’s technology has been in development since around 2016, but COVID-19 has accelerated the rollout of their kiosks and enter-by-face technology. As of September 2021, PopID announced that more than 100 restaurants and retail brands now accept PopPay throughout Southern California with around 70,000 registered users and more than four million facial authentications.

    On September 7th, 2021, PopID announced they plan to go national.

    Some background from the case study

    New hospitality kiosk, contactless, which is designed for hotel food pantries and gift shops.  Scan below and Pay and Go is the mantra and it makes a lot of sense. Having to wait in line for a bottle of water at the hotel can be a pain and there really is no reason for it.  This solution is a cloud-based retail management system that allows associates to scan retail items, apply discounts, and charge to rooms on existing front desk terminals while managers track inventory and report on retail performance from any device.

    Automated Retail Management and “Wait To Pay” converted to “Grab and Go”. ShopPoP is an in-store, guest-facing kiosk. It allows guests to truly grab-and-go without assistance reducing typical front desk burdens associated with offering a lobby retail store.

    On the technology front these units are utilizing software from KioWare.  Saves the solution provider time building their app (and focusing on their app) when a framework like KioWare automatically provides easy development options and built in compliance. QR code used is CR1100.  These people have a wide set of PMS integrations for companies such as Opera, Galaxy and PMI. Processor support comes with CreditCall, Shift4, Datacap Systems, Elavon, Bank of America and Chase Paymentech.
