Acquisition enhances SML’s retail RFID operations portfolio and strengthens Northern Europe footprint

Dallas, Texas - January 12, 2022: SML, a worldwide leader in retail RFID technology and solutions, has today announced that it has acquired Sweden-based retail customer experience platform provider, Sumzed AB. The acquisition expands SML RFID’s retail execution platform, Clarity®, and further grows the organization’s footprint in Northern Europe.

Founded in Alingsås and based in Gothenburg, Sweden, Sumzed now joins the company as part of SML Intelligent Inventory Solutions business led by Dean Frew, CTO and Senior VP of RFID Solutions at SML Group. The addition of Sumzed’s technology will enable SML RFID to expand its solution offering to the organization’s global customer base.

Sumzed’s interactive cloud-based platform combines Content Management Software, Hardware, and Event-Driven Integration to improve the effectiveness of existing store labor in order to elevate the in-store customer experience. Sumzed provides both non-RFID and RFID enabled solutions, including Price Checker, Point of Information, Fitting Room Support, Call for Assistance and Digital Signage.

“Bringing Sumzed into the SML family exemplifies our commitment to extending our leadership in New Era of retail operations by further expanding the suite of technology for our retail customers around the world,” said Dean Frew. “We have seen unprecedented adoption by retailers of our Item-Level RFID solutions and this acquisition enables SML to bring elevated customer experience technology and benefits more directly to our retail customers.”

Calle Skoglöf, Founder of Sumzed, said: "We are delighted to be part of SML, a leader in retail RFID technology, who like us are working to improve the workflow and item-level information management in the physical store. • Leading Swedish sports retailer improves retail performance with 99 percent inventory accuracy across 180 stores

13th January 2022, Texas, USA - SML, a worldwide leader in retail RFID technology and solutions, has today revealed details of its complete solution deployment with leading Swedish sports retailer, Stadium. SML’s item-level RFID solutions, Inspire™ RFID tags, and Clarity® enterprise software have been deployed, resulting in transformational improvements in inventory management and customer service.

Launching in 2018 with an initial pilot project, the partnership has seen the full deployment of item-level RFID technology across 180 Stadium retail stores in the Nordics, allowing the brand to count its stock in every store weekly, instead of its previous once a year Stock Count. Stadium is also using the RFID-enhanced Receiving and Sales Floor Replenishment features within Clarity®. As a direct result, Stadium has seen an increase in inventory accuracy from 70 percent to 99 percent, resulting in dramatic improvement in business performance across the chain.

Speaking about the transformation, Johan Stenström, Supply Chain Developer at Stadium, commented: “Before RFID, we had an unrealistic view of our inventory levels; due to our once-a-year inventory count and existing ERP software that didn’t track lost, stolen, or damaged inventory, we thought our inventory accuracy was nearly perfect when it was actually around 70 percent.”

With the help of SML, Stadium launched an RFID pilot project in two of its Stockholm stores. The pilot proved so successful that Stadium began rolling the technology out to all of its stores and distribution centers, as well as began source and distribution center tagging.

“We implemented the Clarity® solution in our stores to really help our personnel. The enthusiasm about using the technology was so palpable that other stores started calling us to move up their go-live dates,” said Stenström.

Having completed the full deployment at the end of 2021, Stadium has now implemented SML’s item-level RFID technology across 180 stores, utilizing RFID tags, Zebra handheld RFID readers, and SML’s Clarity® software suite. Stadium boasts a 99% inventory accuracy level and has seen a significant increase in sales across the board.

Dean Frew, Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President of RFID Solutions at SML Group, said: “After several years of working with the Stadium team, we’re thrilled at the results they have seen in their business. As we have witnessed with Stadium, item-level RFID technology is a proven technology that can completely revolutionize the way retailers look at inventory management and fulfil customers’ needs. We look forward to continuing to support Stadium on its digital transformation journey.”

  • Dallas, Texas – 17th January 2022SML, an end-to-end RFID specialist for brands around the globe, has announced today that it has released part two of its State of Retail Insight Report: Better Serving Customers Through Technology, finding that 43% of retailers believe enhanced stock level visibility would help them better serve customers and increase the overall customer experience.

The second of a two-part series, The State of Retail in a Post Pandemic Era analyses responses from over 500 independent senior decision-makers and executives from apparel retailers across the US and UK. The report discusses the impact of COVID-19 on the retail sector, specifically highlighting the pivotal role of digital transformation in the post-pandemic retail market, potential concerns surrounding technology implementation in-store, the issues associated with a depleted workforce, and the need to find balance between online and in-store sales channels.

Retail is on the road to recovery. Even before the pandemic, much of the retail landscape was in desperate need of digital transformation. SML’s research highlights a lack of stock visibility as being one of the most prominent current issues within retail. Paired with ongoing labour shortages, this has presented new challenges to the post-pandemic terrain.

The report reflected these issues around stock visibility, and found that 48% of UK and US retail decision-makers experience that out of stock items are the primary challenge for retailers in the current climate. While a short-term fix of revamping online channels allowed retailers to stay afloat during the pandemic, the research shows that issues in back-end processes still remain. SML found that 24% of respondents see an unclear view of inventory as their biggest concern, with 21% also claiming that it takes too long to locate items in-store.

Dean Frew, Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President of RFID Solutions at SML Group, said: “In a lockdown landscape, retailers now have the task of accommodating their customers back in-store, whilst retaining their online presence. Although associated with a number of early-stage challenges, the implementation of Item-level RFID technology can provide retailers with the solution to help provide improved customer satisfaction, operational efficiency and profits.

“By investing in Item-level RFID technology, retailers can have a dramatically more accurate and consistent view of their inventory. This significantly streamlines both online and in-store sales challenges and frees employees’ time, which can be reassigned to the customers’ direct needs.”
