  • Auchan Retail Romania continues the process of digitalizing its stores and introduces Scan & Go, a customer self-scan service available through the Auchan mobile app. The project begins with a pilot stage implemented within the Auchan Drumul Taberei hypermarket in Bucharest and will gradually be available in the entire network of hypermarkets, as well as in MyAuchan convenience stores in the future.

    Starting this month, MyCLUB Auchan users can utilize their own smartphones to scan any product in the store on their own as they add it to their shopping cart, considerably reducing the time spent at the cash register. With the Auchan app, available for free in the Google Play and App Store, customers can scan the barcode on any product in the store. With the app displaying the total value of the shopping cart in real time, customers have permanent cost control and can see the accumulated MyCLUB benefits at the end of their purchases.

    To complete the shopping session, Scan & Go customers can pay in cash or by credit card at the dedicated cash registers. Auchan aims to soon also integrate a new feature, allowing customers to pay for purchases directly from the mobile application.

    How the Scan & Go Service Works

    • Customers open the Auchan app, press the “Start Scan & Go” button, and follow the steps to identify the location of the store and their account in the Auchan app. To access the Scan & Go section, the user has to be a member of MyCLUB Auchan and have an account on the platform.
    • The customers use the app to scan the barcode of each product added to the shopping cart. The number of items can be easily adjusted for each product, including the option to remove scanned items from the cart.
    • After completing the product selection, customers can pay at the designated cash registers.
    • They press the “Pay” button in the app to start the payment process. After specifying whether they want to add shopping bags, the app will load the payment page with a QR code.
    • The customers scan the QR code at the cash register and can then pay for purchases in cash or by credit card.
    • The cash register will issue a tax receipt, which customers need to scan to leave the store.

  • REWE has been offering Mobile Self-Checkout since 2019, testing different providers and solutions. Now, Scan & Go is being standardized on the solution of the Austrian provider shopreme.

    Scan & Go – Advantages and Use

    Customers benefit from Scan & Go by saving time during the checkout and having easy access to shopping cart pre-calculation, additional product information, and integrated services such as PAYBACK and coupons.

    The smooth integration was made possible by shopreme’s SDK (Software Development Kit), enabling a deep and customized embedding of the Scan & Go functionality into REWE’s systems. The requirements and special use cases of the food retail industry can, thus, be fulfilled.

    Scan & Go can be used in two ways at REWE: customers either use the REWE app “REWE Angebote und Lieferservice” to scan the purchase with their own smartphone. Or they use handheld scanner devices from Zebra provided in the stores, which are compatible with the shopreme solution.

    For REWE, the biggest advantages result from the relief of staff and the increase in efficiency at the point of sale.

    Gradual Rollout

    Following the successful test phase, the harmonized Scan & Go solution is to be rolled out gradually in all REWE stores in Germany with the corresponding potential. The basis for this is a long-term partnership between REWE and shopreme. Florian Burgstaller, CEO of shopreme, says:

  • Scan & Go by shopreme went live in more than 160 PENNY stores in Germany on November 22, 2021, which signifies the largest Germany-wide Scan & Go rollout yet.

    Scan & Go is integrated directly into the grocery discounter’s existing shopping app. The PENNY app, which won 1st place at the App Award 2021, includes many features and benefits such as shopping lists and exclusive savings coupons. Scan & Go perfectly complements the shopping assistant, offering customers even more convenience when shopping.  

    With Scan & Go, customers use their own smartphones to scan products directly at the shelf. They can pack the articles immediately and only need to make a smooth and easy payment at the checkout or self-checkout. Customers save a lot of time, as the purchase does not have to be put back on the checkout belt, and they also always have a full overview of the purchase via the app. At the same time, the workload on checkout staff is reduced, and processes become more efficient overall. 

    The REWE subsidiary relies on shopreme’s technically convincing SDK (Software Development Kit), which was able to surpass its competitors in terms of technology as well as quality. The SDK enables seamless integration of Scan & Go into the existing PENNY app and IT systems.  

    After testing different solutions, Penny Germany decided on an implementation with shopreme. Among other things, shopreme specializes in food retailing and can therefore map all special use cases. For the retailer, this reduces the effort and time required for integration and enables rapid implementation as well as a greater return on investment.  

    After the successful testing phase, Scan & Go will be gradually rolled out to more than 2,000 German PENNY stores to offer customers a perfect shopping experience.

  • On 4th of August, 2021, ROSSMANN launched Scan & Go with the use of shopreme. This involves integrating the self-scanning solution directly as an SDK into the existing ROSSMANN app, which already has a very high penetration among its customers. Tests are being conducted in selected stores in order to prepare for a nationwide rollout after the proof-of-concept.

    Shopping becomes much easier for ROSSMANN customers with Scan & Go. Customers scan their drugstore products with their own smartphone directly when taking them from the shelf and can then put them straight into their shopping bag. Without having to place the goods on the checkout belt, customers then simply pay at the checkout or at the self-checkout. The solution is simple, intuitive to use and designed to be fun – for a perfect shopping experience.

    What does shopreme Scan & Go deliver for the ROSSMANN app?

    • Self-scanning using smartphones to simplify and speed up the checkout process for customers and to relieve staff.
