 Press Releases

  • Food waste is a major issue in Tunisia. Every year, Tunisian households waste the equivalent of 572 million dinars (over €171 million) worth of food (source: the French National Consumer Institute). Meanwhile, paradoxically, nearly 500,000 people in the country are undernourished.
Monoprix Tunisia has already taken action to address this issue and is reaffirming its commitment by entering into a strategic partnership with Smartway, a company that supports retailers in their fight against food waste.
By the end of 2024, Monoprix Tunisia plans to deploy Smartway’s AI-based intelligent solutions in its 85 stores. These solutions will assist in-store teams in identifying products nearing their expiry date, determining the best discounts to apply, and taking proactive steps to ensure accurate ordering. The challenge is to balance important concerns for the planet, people, and store profitability. Consumers will also have the opportunity to discover Zero Waste sections, a first in Tunisia.
  • In Thailand, 64% of waste is comprised of food waste, with Thais wasting 254 kg of food per capita per year. Central Food Group, Thailand’s largest supermarket chain, is deeply committed to addressing this issue. Now, it is taking its efforts to the next level by partnering with Smartway, a company that supports retailers in their fight against food waste. The retailer is set to begin testing Smartway’s innovative solutions for digitized food waste management in five of its Tops stores located in Bangkok and surrounding areas. The trial is scheduled to begin during the second quarter of 2024.
Based on artificial intelligence, Smartway’s solutions empower store teams to identify products nearing their expiration date, strategically price them with discounts of 20% to 40%, and take proactive measures to ensure accurate ordering. This translates to significant benefits for customers, boosting their purchasing power and reducing food waste.
    A first in Thailand!
  • Kavanagh’s, in partnership with tech firms Smartway and VusionGroup, uses flashing lights to highlight products that are about to reach their expiry date and AI to suggest ways to discount or donate them.

    • More than 215 products saved from being thrown away, every week.
    • 78% reduction in staff time manually checking product-expiry dates.
    • Equivalent of 1.2 tonnes in CO2 reduction every month.
  • The fruit and vegetable department is the main source of waste in supermarkets: shrinkage accounts for almost 6%, compared with 1.5% in other departments. At the root of the fruits and vegetables challenge ? The ordering process, due to a number of factors: incorrect stocks, orders placed out of habit, outdated order-taking technology, etc.

In response to this major challenge, Smartway, which supports retailers in the fight against food waste since 2012, is launching the “Fresh Operating System” (FOS), a technological innovation specifically designed for fruits and vegetables departments, which perfects the ordering process. The aim is to digitize processes and enable teams to place “THE PERFECT ORDER”, one that limits both shrinkage and out-of-stocks, by combining accurate data analysis and responsiveness to demand variations.
  • Auchan Retail has made the fight against food waste a core focus of its business plan, with a target of zero products wasted by 2032. The widespread rolllout of anti-waste aisles in its stores are a part of this drive. The retailer will gradually deploy Smartway’s tools in all countries in which it operates.
Launched initially in Romania, and in France, this digitised, AI-based food waste management technology has already saved 70 million products (i.e. 33,500 tonnes) per year in the these countries, while avoiding the emission of 82,700 tonnes of CO2. The innovative system is about to be expanded to eight more countries.

  • The Fresh Operating System
    Fresh Operating System (FOS)
The FOS optimizes fresh produce ordering, especially for fruits and vegetables, to ensure maximum freshness, reduce waste, and increase profitability. Using advanced AI, it accurately forecasts demand by considering factors like sales, weather, and seasonality, enabling precise, waste-reducing orders.
The system, accessible on tablets, provides inventory alerts and decision support, making stock management easier and more efficient. This results in fewer out-of-stocks, reduced waste, and stronger store performance and image.

  • The Food Waste Management System
The Food Waste Management System is an all-in-one AI-powered solution for managing short-dated products to reduce waste and increase profitability. It identifies items near expiration and routes them to the best channels, whether through discounts or donations, maximizing product value.
This approach saves in-store teams valuable time while boosting margins and sustainability.
Since 2012, FWMS has helped over 2,000 stores cut waste significantly, improving margins by 0.6 points annually.
